Public Sector Management Program Support Project – Zambia

The objective of this subcomponent was to enhance the external auditing function for improved accountability and transparency in the use of public resources. Identified challenges related to the restructuring of the Office of Auditor General (OAG0, retention of staff and implementation of audit standards currently being funded under a separate agreement with the Norwegian and Netherlands Governments.

The main activities financed under this subcomponent enhanced the institutional capacity of the OAG to decentralize to districts and provinces.  This work was started under the first phase but was discontinued when funds earmarked for this activity were reallocated to the public service retrenchment payments. Other activities included Enhancement of the independence of the Office of the Auditor General; Development of human and institutional capacity; and Decentralization of the operations of the OAG.
